Riyaz-Practice

Tuesday, May 28, 2013

Riyaz is very important factor in Indian Classical Music, In order to gain expertise we should practice every day. A Small but continuous effort always leads to the major achievement.

Now Question is that what should Riyaz?

Someone asked to Ustad Vilayat Khan about Riyaz and Ustad replied that “Practice what you cannot play properly…”

This directs our self to practice the difficulties so that they can be overcome over a period of time.

Some believes that we should practice the Paltas and Alankars every to improve our mastery over instrument. This can really improve your mastery but sometimes turns into mechanized practice which should be avoided.

Here comes Pandit Ravishankar , who upon asking of practice the basic scales every day, replied that “ Yes I do it every day, without that how you can live?”

I Note one more interview of Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan who said that how much time you sit for Riyaz is not important but how much time you actually practiced is important.

There are still more detailed concepts are there on this topic but will discuss it later.

Layout Change

Layout of the current blog is changed. The pages are on left side, clearly visible and accessed from the main page.

The url www.hindustanimusics.com will be pointed towards this blog.

I would like to develop this blog as fully website instead of developing the separate website which becomes down due to technical issues

Stay tuned, new developments will be visible

Down Again

Due to some problems the website is down again

Can anyone suggest the good web hosting website with good plans?

Shruti and Swar

Tuesday, April 9, 2013

We know that there are 22 shruties are in the indian classical music and there are 7 swaras.  Now if we divide the 22 to 7, then we will get the ratio which is known as PI (22/7=3.14).

This ratio is used to measure the circle

Holes Placement

It was asked to me many times that how we locate the holes position in the bansuri? In my opinion, if you are making the standard flute with the standard pitch, then the best way is to copy the existing good flute.The reason of this is that holes location already calculated and placed for the correct sound and tested practically which can be used easily.

Finding Fundamental Length

Sunday, November 6, 2011
Now we will proceed to find the Fundamental Lenth, i.e., Theoritical length

Note that this is a length from the Blowhole center to the open end. First we have to find the wave length for the fundamental, for that the equation is

C = Y x F

                       Where, C = Velocity of the sound
                                   Y= Wavelength
                                   F = frequency

Suppose i want to make the A flute with frequency = 440 Hz . The Lowest Frequency will be Pa (G), frequecny = 440x2/3= 293 Hz

So the wavelength is Y = C/F

Taking the velocity of the sound =330 m/s

Y = 330/293

Y=1.12 Mtrs

Now this is the wavelength of our first harmonics,
To find length L = Y/4
So this will be 1.12/4 =  0.28 mtrs = 28 cms.
 so the distance from blowhole to end of the other flute will be 28 cms, not considering the corrections.
Hence the length will be kept slight more to do practical tuning and finding K1 and K2, which is explained in the earlier posts.
